Three Stoogies

Three Stoogies is a 16" by 20" pencil drawing.

They were saddled and waiting in the rain at Cheyenne Frontier Days.  I used the fence as a design element of negative space and to add a counterpoint to the realism of the horses.

Working on an oil on canvas in the glazing style. Currently establishing the underpainting of lights and darks, to be followed by glazes of color. The Old Masters style of glowing light is interesting to explore with a subject such as Night Blooming Cereus which always seem to have a glowing aspect all on their own.

Giant

Giant is a 24" by 30" oil painting, 2007.

The saguaro is the same one in the colored pencil drawing Desert Giant. This cactus is located near the Rincon Mountains in Saguaro National Park East near the junction of Squeeze Pen and Loma Verde trails. It seemed it was my job to remember it in its' prime as well as the beauty of the decaying form.

The saguaro is the same one in the oil painting Giant. This cactus is located near the Rincon Mountains in Saguaro National Park East near the junction of Squeeze Pen and Loma Verde Trails. This saguaro was magnificent, having the most arms of any I'd ever seen.

Prickly Pear Blossoms

I wanted to focus on the blossoms, letting the remaining shapes become more abstract.

Prickly Pears at Dawn

Prickly Pears at Dawn is a 22" by 24" prismacolor pencil drawing.

I was caught up in the backlighting as the blooms glowed in the late afternoon light. I also liked the rose like shapes the spent blooms formed.
